How To Build A Survival Shelter (Step-By-Step Instructions)

If you are ever forced to bug out, having a shelter is crucial.

You need a place to sleep, rest, and feel safe.

If you are a prepper, you may or may not have a place in mind.

A community center or a school gym are both excellent options.

But you need to have plan B.

If your go-to becomes compromised, you need to be able to take cover somewhere else.

The simplest way to do that is to build your own shelter.

This may seem like a daunting task, but itโ€™s actually pretty easy.

If you follow these steps, you can even build a shelter in the middle of nowhere:

Step 1: Find a Location

To find the ideal spot for your shelter, answer the 5 Wโ€™s

Step 2: Gather Materials

Gather materials such as branches, leaves, and grass.

You can also use tarpaulin or a survival blanket if you have one.

Look for branches that are straight and sturdy, as they will create the foundation of your shelter.

Step 3: Build the Frame

Use the branches to create a triangular frame, and lean them against a tree or a rock.

Make sure the branches are securely anchored to the ground.

Step 4: Cover the Frame

Once the frame is in place, cover it with leaves, grass, or tarpaulin.

If you are using natural materials, use dry ones to prevent mold or mildew from forming.

You can also use pine needles, ferns, or moss to create a waterproof layer.

Step 5: Create a Door

Create a doorway by leaving a gap in the shelter, and use branches or sticks to create a simple latch.

You can also use a tarpaulin flap to cover the doorway for added protection.

Step 6: Add Insulation

If you have additional materials, such as blankets or sleeping bags, add them to the inside of the shelter to create insulation.

This will keep you warm and comfortable during the night.

See, I told you it was easy!

Just like with any skill, however, you need some practice.

Itโ€™s not going to be perfect the first time and thatโ€™s okay.

Try to fulfill everything in this checklist.
